Australia`s government issued its first mandatory recall today, forcing automakers to repair millions of deadly explosive airbags. Porsche, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Horton are all on the list.
Fearing that the Takata (Takata) airbags installed by several brands of cars could blow metal debris into the passenger`s face when it opens, it could even cause a huge safety hazard that could lead to serious injuries and deaths. Government will announce the recall of the affected cars, including Ford (Ford), Holden (Holden), Volkswagen (Volkswagen), Honda (Honda), Toyota (Toyota), Lexus (Lexus), BMW (BMW), Mazda (Mazda), Nissan (Nissan), Audi (Audi), Jaguar (Jaguar), Porsche (Porsche), Mercedes-Benz (Mercedes Benz) and Tesla (Tesla) are among 25 manufacturers. The carmakers will have to replace airbags "as fast as possible" for owners free of charge.
Assistant Treasury Secretary Michael Sukkar today announced a recall of affected cars in what is believed to be one of the biggest consumer-facing recalls in Australia`s history.
"the overall results of the previous voluntary recall were not satisfactory. This is a matter of security for all Australians and is a top priority for the government, "Mr. Sukkar told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday.
"this mandatory recall will force carmakers, dealers, importers and other suppliers to ensure that all dangerous Takata airbags are found and replaced as soon as possible."
It is estimated that about 2.3 million cars on Australian roads are fitted with defective Takata airbags, which are currently linked to more than 23 deaths and 230 injuries worldwide. Last year, a man died and a woman was seriously injured in Australia.
Ammonium nitrate compounds used in Takada`s airbags become unstable over time, or contact with heat sources for long periods of time, causing airbags to explode. When the airbags pop up, the ammonium nitrate burns violently, causing metal fragments to be ejected at passengers sitting in the car.
Australia`s government believes that while the recall could cause inconvenience to millions of Australians, the potential danger means such a recall is inevitable. This national airbag must be replaced by December 30, 2020.
Rod Sims, head of (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission), the Australian Competition and Consumer Council, said only 1.3 million of the 2.3 million vehicles affected had been recalled last year, but millions of potential airbags remained unreplaced.
The Takata Alpha airbags will be the first parts to be replaced because they pose "extreme safety risks" and vehicles that install them should not be driven on the road.
According to a January ruling by the U.S. Department of Justice, Japanese company Takata "repeatedly systematically tampered with key test data related to its product safety." Although the airbags do not meet manufacturer`s standards, they have been installed in cars sold over the past decade.
In a September 2016 test of 245000 airbags by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration broke down when it popped up. Among them, the Alpha model was found to have a rupture rate of up to 50%.
Injuries recorded around the world include vision loss, facial injuries, facial, neck and body lacerations, vocal cord breaks, spinal cord injuries and head injuries, including brain injuries.
