Australia's top 10 hot flight destinations of the year (Traveller photo)

While football may be the most searched word in the world in 2018, Australian tourists are most curious about the resort island paradise of Maldives.

In 2018, Australia's most searched flight destination was Maldives, with a peak in the second week of January, according to travel website Traveller. This is also the search trend for residents scheduled to travel in 2019, with the exception of Bali, which saw a surge in search for flight destinations between December 31 and mid-January. Bali's search peaked in June, when Australia's weather sank into gloom.

Residents of Western Australia are behind the increase in search in the Maldives, who also search for "luxury vacations" and "villas."

Aussie residents search for flight destination list number two is India. According to Google (Google), searches include information about cities such as Chennai, Kochin and Hyderabad. Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh in southern India, is known for its amazing architecture.

In terms of American cities, Los Angeles beat New York as Australia's most searched city. Both cities have been extensively searched by residents of eastern Australia, who may want to travel outside of the big cities.

The search for Aussie residents on flights to Los Angeles and further searches for travel to San Diego, Mexico and Cuba does not seem surprising. People planning to travel to New York will also search for information about cities such as Quebec and Alaska.

The 2018 Hot search list (2018 Year in Search) also noted that the World Cup, Megan Markle (Meghan Markle) and Royal Wedding were the hottest topics in 2018.

Australia's most sought-after questions also include "what is Listeria" and "what is Bitcoin".
