More than five hundred thousand immigrants came to Australia last fiscal year, but two hundred and seventy six thousand people couldn't stay here.

More than five hundred thousand immigrants arrived in Australia last fiscal year, according to new data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

While the 539000 arrivals were the largest in a year, the figure was offset by the 276000 who left Australia.

But internal immigration-people moving from state to state-reached their highest level in more than a decade.

Bray (Myles Burleigh), director of immigration statistics at the agency, said the number of interstate immigrants had reached their highest level in 13 years.

"taking into account the number of departures, the net number of overseas immigrants was 262000, down from a record three hundred thousand in 2008-09," Mr Bray said.

Victoria is the largest increase in population growth among interstate immigrants in all states and territories, just ahead of Queensland.

Bray said nearly 87000 people had moved from another state to Victoria over the past year and 68500 had left, the highest-ever net gain for the state. "Kunzhou is a little behind, with a net increase of 17800."

Last year, the net temporary visa population moved to Victoria reached its highest level in 12 years, thanks to a growing number of international students.

Nearly 97000 temporary visa holders arrived in Victoria-about half of them international students.

In the same year, about 34000 temporary visa holders left Australia, a net increase of about 63000. The previous year, temporary visa holders jumped by about 50000.

Net immigrants with permanent visas also hit a 12-year high last fiscal year, reaching nearly 28000 in Victoria.

Economist Ron (Terry Rawnsley) says population growth is putting a lot of pressure on the state's infrastructure.

"the benefit, in turn, is that a large number of students come to Victoria for higher education; each of these students contributes economically to the state. This is the state's largest export industry. "

Of the 539000 people who emigrated to Australia throughout the year, 315000 held temporary visas-including just over one hundred and fifty thousand international students, just over 50, 000 migrant vacationers and 32,000 temporary technology visa holders.
