There are only 10 cases a year: why Melbourne's safest district is so secure

Not everyone is as idle as Warrandyte's police officer.

Those who dream of being a cop, kick a bad man's door open, and subdue an asshole to the ground may find their work actually drowsy.

Located northeast of Melbourne, Warrandyte, along with Donvale, Park Orchards, Doncaster East, Templestowe, Wonga Park, Kangaroo Ground and Wattle Glen, has Melbourne's lowest crime rate.

According to the head of the crime statistics machine, there is only one crime per 30 inhabitants in the area, a crime rate three times lower than the state average.

Police officer-in-charge Stewart Henderson says some new cops aren't used to waving at them as they pass by or stopping them for a chat.

Sometimes things were settled before the police intervened. He says it's mainly because the neighborhood is very close.

This means that suspicious outsiders can be quickly identified, and many local residents use social media to monitor suspicious activity and notify residents.

But the region has not been spared from the rise in crime in Melbourne. In the 12 months to March, 53 burglaries were reported, up from 15 a year earlier.

Demographer Glenn Capuano says the demographics of the area are also responsible for low crime. Men in their 20s are most likely to commit crimes, and the region's main residents are young families, British expatriates and elderly residents.

Real estate agency Vicki Gardner says the area is unlikely to change significantly in the future. It is part of a greenbelt that does not allow for parcels and large-scale apartment developments.

Another area of Melbourne with a crime rate is Kalorama,, which is near Dandenongrange, with about a thousand people.

Last year, there were only 10 crimes, including two criminal sabotages, two burglaries and one attack. One car was stolen and the other broke into the door. In another case of theft, one person was found to grow illicit drugs at home, and one person was arrested.
