Do you know three sister cities overseas in Canberra?

Nara, Japan

Nara became a sister city in Canberra in 1993.

Canberra was one of Australia's youngest capitals and Nara was one of Japan's ancient capitals.

The two cities have a good relationship, and Canberra holds the Nara Candle Festival every October.

Cultural activities on both sides are also very active, often with schools, teachers, musicians and athletes.

Earlier this year, 80 students from a high school in Nara went to Canberra for music exchanges and spent a week in the Capital Territory.

Canberra also has a volunteer-run Nara sister city council aimed at strengthening bilateral exchanges.

Over the past 30 years, Nara residents have raised A $ one hundred thousand for Canberra-Nara Park on Lake Burley Griffin's Lennox Garden.

After the Canberra Forest Fire in 2003, the Nara city government donated A $150000.

Beijing, China

China's capital and Canberra formed sister cities in 2000 to further develop business, education and trade opportunities between the two cities.

There are also cultural exchanges between the two sides-the Beijing municipal government donated a traditional Chinese garden to Canberra as a millennium gift at Lake Burley Griffin.

Canberra was also the only site in Australia during the 2008 Beijing Olympic torch relay.

Wellington, New Zealand

Wellington became Canberra's sister city only in July, promoting tourism and trade between the two cities.

Because Wellington is the latest sister city in Canberra, we are waiting to see how this relationship will prosper.
