It didn't exist from birth! More than 3,000 children in the new state become unregistered

More than 3000 children under the age of five have no official status in the new state because their parents have failed to obtain their birth certificates.

Although their births are recorded in hospitals, new state birth, death and marriage registries do not have their birth records, which means they are actually "not on paper" or are not legally visible.

The vast majority of these children come from aboriginal communities, and new state authorities have launched campaigns to encourage parents to sign up for their children.

While no school would reject a child without a birth certificate, the Registrar, Amanda Ianna (Amanda Ianna), said the absence of the document would make things more difficult, such as getting a driver's license, a tax number or a passport.

"the number of aborigines who have not yet been registered is too high," she said.

"this can cause trouble when a child needs a birth certificate to attend school or to participate in an organized exercise, or when they need to obtain a driver's license or tax file number when they grow up. Birth certificates are passports for many things in life that we usually take for granted. "

"some moms mistakenly think they need to pay for their children's hukou, or they think the hospital will take care of them. But that's not the case. "

Birth registration is not only the first legal recognition of the existence of a child, but also protects a child from child labour and is not treated as an adult by the justice system after arrest, free from child marriage and sexual exploitation.

The new state of government has launched a "Let our Children count" (Called Our Kids Count) campaign to address the problem, which will focus on indigenous mothers, although government encourages all parents who have not yet registered their children to do so.

First-year children were 25 percent more likely to have no hukou than non-aboriginal children, according to registry data.

Since the launch of the online birth registration pilot program in February, about 98 percent of births at Dubbo Hospital have been registered.

The plan was expanded last month, and parents are now able to register for new-born babies on a state-wide basis.

Globally, 45% of children under the age of 5 are believed to have no birth certificate.

Reporting accounts for newborn babies can be done at the following address: www.bdm.nsw.gov.au.
