Hangzhou babysitter arson latest progress: sentencing on the 4th of second instance

More than half a month after China's sensational Hangzhou nanny arson suspect Mo Huanjing opened the second trial, the final verdict will be pronounced in Zhejiang Provincial High Court at 15:00 Beijing time on June 4.

On February 9, 2018, Hangzhou Intermediate people's Court of Zhejiang Province sentenced Mo Huanjing to death for arson at first instance. Soon, Mo Huan-Jing appealed to the Provincial High people's Court.

Prosecutors said the first-instance verdict found Mo Huan-Jing arson, the theft facts clear, evidence is true, adequate, accurate qualitative, appropriate sentencing. It is therefore recommended that the appeal be dismissed and that the decision be upheld.

At the trial, the suspect, Mo Huan-ching, said the serious consequences of the case were not what he wanted, asking for a lighter sentence, and said he was willing to accept it if the second instance upheld the verdict.

Wu Pengbin, an acting lawyer in charge of the case, said he was not optimistic about the outcome of the verdict at the second instance, and that the possibility of a lighter sentence was very low.

On June 3, Beijing Youth Daily reported that the second instance of the case will be pronounced publicly at 15:00 on June 4.
