Introduction

The Silverton Gaol and Historical Museum is located in the western interior of New South Wales, about 20 kilometers from Broken Hill, in the small town of (Silverton)., Sirfton.

Sirfton Prison (Silverton Gaol) was built in 1889, and within a few years of being built, all of Sirfton's activities were transferred to Broken Hill.. It is now a museum with local historical photographs, documents, household items and mining equipment, most notably a coroner's bath, which used to store corpses when they came. From the coroner from Sydney to the coroner from Sydney, 1100 kilometers away, the corpses could have been stored for as long as three months in the past when there was no railway.
