Shrine of Remembrance is located in King's Park (Kings Domain) on the south bank of the Yalá River (Yarra River), the capital of Victoria, next to Jorda Street (St Kilda Road).
Shrine of Remembrance was built to commemorate more than 114,000 Victorian soldiers who participated in the First World War, including 19,000 soldiers who died on the European battlefield. It was officially opened to the public in 1934. This stately building adopts the classical Greek design style. The relief on the front of the memorial is based on the pattern of the goddess of peace in ancient Greek mythology, symbolizing the soldiers fighting for peace. There is a black monument on the ground in the center of the memorial hall. The English word "LOVE" is engraved on it, and various flowers are placed around it. Every visitor who enters the museum will look down at the stone tablet silently, remembering the soldiers who gave their lives for peace. At the promenade around the memorial, there are 42 fine bronze boxes, each containing the names and deeds of soldiers who took part in the first world war. Since the opening of the memorial in 1934, the 42 lists have been opened by veterans at 8 a.m. to be remembered by future generations.
In the square outside the memorial, there is a sacred altar, which was lit by Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1956. Celebrations are now held every year on ANZ Day (Anzac Day)(25 April) and on Truce Day (11 November).
