According to the ranking of universities in the world, the number of famous Australian universities is second only to that of Britain and the United States.

 08 Jun 2018

The seven Australian universities are included in the top 100 of the QS World Universities, of which the Australian National University and the University of Melbourne are once again the best institutions for higher education in Australia.

The QS World University ranking is the annual World University ranking published by Quacquarelli Symonds, the British education organization, and the second oldest global university ranking.

According to the latest QS ranking, Australia has five universities in the top 50 in the world, of which the Australian National University ranks 24th, the University of Melbourne (39th), the University of Sydney (42nd), the University of New South Wales (45th) and the University of Queensland (48th).

Australia ranks in the top 50 universities, more than any other country except the United States and the United Kingdom-the United States accounts for 19 of the top 50 universities and the United Kingdom has eight.

Among the seven Australian universities in the top 100 are Monash University 59th and Western Australian University 91st.

It is also the seven-year-old Australian university, which was also in the top of the QS World`s Top 100 University last year.

The QS ranking, which is highly dependent on reputation surveys (40 per cent from global academics and 10 per cent from global employers` surveys), is more generous for Australian universities than the other two major university rankings-The Times higher education and world university academic rankings (commonly known as the Shanghai rankings, which are compiled in Shanghai).

Last year, Australia made the list of six of the top 100 universities in The Times higher education, the highest of which was the University of Melbourne, ranking 32nd.

The academic rankings of world universities only consider the quality of research, regardless of teaching. Last year, six Australian universities entered the top 100, the highest ranking was the University of Melbourne (39th), and the bottom was the Australian National University (97th).

Overall, 25 Australian universities in this year`s QS rankings are in the top 500 universities in the world, compared with 25 in the top 500 of The Times higher education last year and 23 in the top 500 academic rankings of world universities.

The fastest-improving QS rankings this year are Flinders University (No. 478) and the University of Western Sydney (No. 498), both of which have leapt to more than 50 places and have just entered the top 500.

Other progressive universities include UTS, Sydney University of Science and Technology (from 176th to 160th), Wolonggang University (from 232to 218th), Curtin University (from 262nd to 250th), South Australia (from 279th to 264th) and Tasmania (from 313th to 287th), Swinburne University).
