Opal Tower tenants are caught in a dilemma, uninhabitable landlords and unwilling to withdraw their rentals

 07 Jan 2019

Opal Tower since the big cracks in the building, the residents are going in and out of a lot of pain.

People who rent in Opal Tower are also caught in a dilemma, with apartments unable to live and landlords reluctant to back down.

Tenant Jahananbish said he still has to pay about A $600 a week for rent, even though he can`t live in his apartment right now.

He contacted the agent on the 3rd, but he was told that the landlord refused to give in.

"the landlord doesn`t agree to reduce the rent or terminate the contract, but I don`t even live here," Jahananbish said. "Why do I have to pay for it?"

The property manager informed tenants that they would not terminate the lease as required because the building was not recognized as "non-habitable".

In addition, many tenants face the same situation.

Another tenant, Kim, also stayed at the hotel, but the rent was paid.

According to the Fair Trading Commission, if the property is unfit to live, the lease contract may be terminated.

"it is worth noting that although tenants have alternative accommodation, this is not provided by landlords, but rather by builders, and I think landlords should reduce rents," said tenant coalition Ross.

At the same time, residents are complaining that their homes have been "destroyed" by investigators,

At least 29 apartments were "investigated" by builder Icon, and 15 were supported.

Residents returned home to find that walls, ceilings and carpets were all "skinned".

One owner said he was dissatisfied that the walls in his home had been cut, saying investigators had not communicated with them in advance and that "we can only get the latest news through the media."
