A group fight broke out Monday night near Sydney`s Burwood railway station. A Chinese student was seriously injured.

The Chinese student`s home in Campsie, has escalated to a "critical" condition after being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

Yesterday morning, he underwent head surgery and is still in an induced coma. However, the police confirmed that his condition is still stable.

The new state police attached great importance to the vicious incident, and they urgently arrested a 29-year-old British man, Brad Nichol.

After being interrogated by police yesterday, the British man was charged with assault causing physical injury and assault.

Officer Ian Pryde restated the scene:

"at about 11:45 last night, the two groups were massed in the vicinity of Burwood Rd (Deane St) to fight, then the two groups separated, but not long after the confrontation broke out again, and one man rushed to the other man and ran away after he fell to the ground."

Nichol allegedly hit the victim in the head, causing him to fall to the ground and lose consciousness after hitting the head.

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene shortly after the incident, shortly after Nichol and his friends were arrested.

Nichol`s friends have been released pending further investigation. The case will appear in court on March 26th.

A nearby clerk said he believed the attack had taken place outside of Hungry Jacks and that "there have been fights almost everywhere in the neighborhood, and it is not uncommon." There are reports that alcohol may be the cause of the conflict.
