Queensland to build Australia's largest lithium battery pack

One of Australia`s largest lithium battery packs will be built in southwest Queensland. The size of the lithium battery pack will be the same as the giant Tesla battery pack that Tesla built with electricity on the South Australian grid.

Two major power and energy giants, AGL and Venal Energy, signed an agreement on Wednesday (today) to start construction of a battery energy storage system in July. The project is said to be built in Wandoan, about a five-hour drive north-west of Brisbane, and could power up to 57,000 homes.

Brett Redman, chief executive of AGL, said the battery`s energy storage system has a capacity of 100 MW and can store 150 MWh of energy. The system will now be the largest of five battery projects in Queensland. Three of them are online and the other is expected to be in townsville next month. The AGL battery pack will be built, operated and later maintained by Australia`s Vena Energy. Nitin Apte, chief executive of Vena Energy, said the system would improve the reliability of the grid. The battery pack is the first step for Vena Energy, which plans to build a solar power plant at the same location next year. The $650 million Wandoan South project could provide solar power to 400,000 households.

In 2017, Elon Musk bets on Twitter that he could install a ready-to-use Tesla battery pack in South Australia within 100 days following a massive blackout in South Australia.
