Last night, a woman was subjected to sexual invasion in a park north of Melbourne.

Just after 10:30 on Saturday night, she was attacked in Mayer Park, Thornbury, and paramedics received reports of an attack in the park around 11:15 that night.

Police and SES staff spent hours searching for evidence in the park, and some legal medical expert staff took evidence around a toilet in the park.

The crime scene was reopened to the public by 7 a.m., while the female victim spent one night in the hospital and is now discharged from the hospital.

A team of four police officers is currently investigating households around the park, and a police car is patrolling the park.

No one has yet been arrested for the incident.

Behind the toilet near the adjacent golf course, witnesses saw police set up crime scene tents.

Valkanov (Ursula Valkanoff) was upset to learn that someone had been attacked in front of her house.

"this is terrible," she said. "I always thought this place was safe, but it made me feel weak. I was also a woman, and it made me sad and angry. It was unfair."

Another resident woke up at 3 am and found bright lights from the crime scene straight into his room. His wife said, "the park should be safe."

The park is very popular with dog walkers, young families and sports clubs.

This is the latest in a number of appalling public attacks on women in Melbourne Park or in the northern suburbs.

Earlier this year, 25-year-old Courtney Herron was killed in Royal Park in Parkville. In June 2018, 22-year-old Eurydice Dixon was followed by Jaymes Todd in Princes Park, Carlton. In January, 21-year-old Aiia Maasarwe was rape and kill. At Bundoora when he was about to get home.
