Having a good command of reading and writing in English is important for new immigrants who want to find jobs and integrate into Australian society, according to SBS. For this reason, Australia's goverment offers a number of free English courses to immigrants and refugees on specific visas.
I. English courses for adult immigrants
The Australian Migrant English Program, short for AMEP
The course is designed for newcomers to Australia and supports them in basic English knowledge and settlement skills. Eligible people can get up to 510 hours of free English tutoring.
Study qualification
- You must be a permanent resident or hold a qualified temporary visa, such as a spouse visa or a temporary protection visa (Temporary Protection Visa);
- Adults must register with one of the institutions offering AMEP courses within six months of arrival in Australia. Children and young people under the age of 18 must complete their registration within 12 months of arrival in Australia;
- You must begin classes within 12 months of registration and complete the course within 5 years.

There are 3000 institutions offering AMEP programs in Australia, and you can choose one of the closest to you and contact them for registration.
Multilingual information
Most educational institutions offering AMEP programs have bilingual staff to assist you in your mother tongue during the initial consultation phase.

II. Education and employment skills courses
Skills for Education and Employment, short for SEE
If you have been in Australia for more than six months and have mastered basic English, but you need to improve your English skills to find a job, the SEE course is perfect for you.
Eligible people can get up to 800 hours of free reading and writing, arithmetic training courses to help you find a job.
Study qualification
- Between 15 and 64 years of age;
- Registration of job seekers at (Department of Human Services), Civil Affairs Department;
- Part-time students;
- The type of visa you hold complies with the rules and allows you to enjoy the benefits.

Third, flexible teaching
AMEP and SEE courses can provide you with a flexible learning environment. This means that you can not only learn English in class, but also choose distance teaching. You can study full-time or part-time. You can also choose a day or night course.
