Three-quarters of Australians call for social media regulation

Nearly three-quarters of australians want tighter control over political advertising on social media platforms, according to a new report.

A Essential Research survey found that 73 per cent of respondents supported requiring social media platforms to ensure that political advertising was real, while 70 per cent said the platform should be used to confirm that advertising organizations were registered locally.

The figures are part of a report released by the Australian Institute on the impact of social media on the 2019 election.

It found a flood of misinformation on social media and a serious lack of regulation of social media during the election.

Peter Lewis, director of the research center, said the report was supported by public research, indicating that the timing of monitoring social media during the election has come.

""The report shows that the election laws failed to keep pace with technological change, and the large social media platform is now the same as law."," said Lewis.

"the experience of the entire Western democracy is that the way these online platforms work is driving divisions and fuelling discord, while abandoning any responsibility to ensure the authenticity of political advertising."
