ALDI: Australia's cheapest basket

 06 Jun 2017

In the case of the basket in the hands of Australian shoppers, it would have saved nearly A $80 to choose cheap goods from Aldi, a German supermarket, than those in big supermarkets.

Choice, a consumer group, conducted a recent survey and compared the average price of a basket of 33 items under three supermarkets, Adli,Coles and Woolworths.

Each basket contains 28 packaged goods and 5 fresh vegetables and fruits. This includes beef rice, eggs, chicken breasts, apples, broccoli and potatoes.

Investigators disguised as consumers sampled a total of 110 supermarkets in Australia in March and found that Adli`s basket was the cheapest, averaging A $91.76.

By contrast, Cole and Woolworths cost an average of A $99.40 and A $97.31 per basket, respectively.

Choice also found that if you choose the highest-end products from supermarkets, the price of each Coles basket is A $170.54, followed by Woolworths`s A $168.74.

If you choose a similar grade, the baskets are priced at A $102.50 for Aldi, A $112.89 for Woolworths and A $113.10 for Coles.

Choice did not give a list of specific items selected for each basket count.
