Acting immigrant minister tach insists students should abide by the law

Federal government revoked visas for nearly 18,000 foreign students last year, with 4,686 Chinese students.

Figures from the Home Office show that the number of Chinese students whose visas have been revoked is the highest in five years. The number of Chinese students with revoked visas has been the highest since 2014/15, but Australia has the largest number of international students from China, accounting for about 39 per cent in early 2019.

In the last financial year,45,309 student visas were granted to Chinese citizens.

The second most suspended student visa for the 2018-19 fiscal year was in south korea, where citizen was 1503. The third largest number was in india, with 1157 citizens. The fourth-most is malaysia`s citizen, at 1107. The fifth largest was brazil`s citizen,914.

The main reasons for the suspension of visas for foreign students are insufficient attendance at classes, incorrect information or false documentation, and students who have been identified as "untrue ".

Other common causes include significant changes in the situation, such as requests for cancellation of visas from students returning home for some reason.

International students should abide by the law, said Alan Tudge, a deputy immigrant. "Like all visa holders, international students must comply with their visa conditions. "

"The application of these provisions is equal, regardless of the country from which they come. Anyone who fails to comply with their visa conditions will have the risk of being revoked. "

The peak period for student visa revocation was 2015-16- when up to 19,685 foreign students were revoked - compared to the previous 2014-15 when only 10,821 were revoked.

Phil Honeywood, president of the International Education Association of Australia, said some international students often switched courses and "lagged" their recognition after federal government cleaned up the provider.

"Over the past few years, we have systematically cleaned up poor educational providers and study abroad intermediaries," he said. However, there is a lag, before seven or eight, in which many students with initial student visas change their courses and schools. Many of them were in trouble because they had no time to extend their visas. "

"The continued rate of the number of revoked visas is a true reflection of the situation of many students in this regard. "

Among those whose student visas were revoked in 2018-19,8913 were male students between the ages of 18 and 34, compared with 6129 for school girl in the same age group.

While the number of international students who have revoked their visas is generally stable, the number of international students granted visas has been growing. Tache stressed that the student visa program "is very important to Australian economics."

"It supports our global competitiveness and strengthens cultural, trade and business ties with other countries," he said. "

Last year international students brought $37.6 billion in income to australia`s economics and supported more than 250,000 jobs. "

Mr Tatch said the federal government "is committed to maintaining Australia`s status as a destination for overseas students".

"Government has announced a series of measures to encourage international students to study at local universities. "
