Recently, the waiting period for naturalization has been significantly extended by several months, according to the latest (Home Affairs) data from the Home Affairs Department, Ausa news agency reported.

At present, 3 / 4 of potential Australian citizens have to wait as long as 13 months before a naturalization application results. The average processing time for Australian naturalization applications was three months longer than in October last year.

In addition, 90% of applicants received naturalization results in 14 months last October, up from 16 months now.

Immigration is waiting longer as immigration moves to automated offices, hundreds of naturalized staff are cut, and applications surge.

Senator (Nick McKim) of the Green Party said the delay was a disrespect for aspiring Australian citizens, which affected applicants' important life choices in terms of employment, housing and education.

"people want to be able to plan their lives. For many people these days, this is no longer possible because of delays in naturalization approvals. " "people who wish to make important commitments to Australia through naturalization should be respected and their applications processed within a reasonable time," he said.

The extension of naturalization approval comes as Mr Tan's (Malcolm Turnbull) goverment is pushing for stricter naturalization thresholds, including plans to extend the waiting period for permanent residents to four years.

A spokesman for the interior ministry said more and more people wanted to become naturalized each year, and the department had a responsibility to thoroughly evaluate each application.

"it's not usually easy and quick to solve these complex issues because decision makers have to deal with special circumstances that vary from case to case."

The Ministry of the Interior has allocated more than A $100 million to reform visa and naturalization procedures amid double-digit growth in most visa categories.
