An agricultural lobbyist said that the mark of origin (COO) law had wasted the energy of the consumer, and the time-to-time people. They didn`t realize that some "Made in Australia" of bacon and ham, the only local ingredients left the "water".

Peter Haydon, general manager of the Australian pork company, said that, after a two-year transition, the full implementation of the COO identification law last July had not been fully implemented.

Labels for products grown, manufactured or manufactured in Australia are accompanied by a bar chart indicating the percentage of Australian composition in addition to the text.

Hayden said many consumers saw the "made in Australia" label, but did not fully read the text and did not interpret the bar chart.

Many prepackaged commodities (and even supermarket deli) from Canada, the United States and Denmark, such as bacon and ham, may contain less than 20 percent of the local ingredients, he said.

"the Australian ingredients of most meat products are water to meet consumer demand for meat and moisture," Hayden said.

"We have law of origin that allows consumers to know the content of Australian ingredients, but no one knows how they exist, and no one knows how to see them."

It is estimated that the amount of pork imported per year is more than 700 million yuan.

Hayden said Australian pork companies will launch an awareness campaign in early 2020 to help consumers who want to make conscious choices buy products that contain a high proportion of local ingredients.

Pork made at home, such as minced meat, ribs and barbecue, is made in Australia, he said, and even many local meat vendors sell almost 100 percent of their sausages and bacon.

He said: "We plan to conduct a market test at the beginning of 2020 to explain the meaning of the country`s label and see if it will affect their behavior. All of the fresh pork is produced in Australia, which is why we focus on fresh pork, and every piece of ham that you buy is Australia."

Veteran federal councillor Carter (Bob Katter) said the Australian government should not open the door to imports of pork from Canada and Europe.

The Australian Party leader says the import and export sector is not equal, and the government has failed to protect the livelihoods of Australian farmers.

"this pork should not be allowed into Australia," Carter said. "European countries do not accept our live beef, so we should say that unless they accept our beef, we will not accept their pork."

`The local people are conscious of the new food labels on the fresh meat in the shop,` said Shane Rogers, the owner of West End`s meat store.

They said their "Made in Australia" had at least 95% of the local ingredients, and they used the stocking of pork.

"We use 100 percent of Australian pork and 5 percent is a safety threshold in case some salt and condiments are not local, but we`re very close to 100 percent," he said.

Haydn understands why some large-scale manufacturers import pork to make bacon and sandwich ham, but he wants consumers to learn more about this growing trend.

Rising food, electricity and labor costs are part of the reason why some commodities must be imported pork, he said.

"Big companies have to cater to the rich and less rich. Imported ham and bacon are cheaper for a lot of reasons," he said. "Pigs are better raised in winter. Winter in Canada is obviously much longer than ours, so imported pork has been used here for some time."
