A new type of coronavirus pneumonia with a fatal risk was diagnosed in Virginia today, the Herald Sun reported. The patient flew to Melbourne from Wuhan last week.
Jenny Mikako, head of health at Victoria, confirmed that the first new type of coronavirus diagnosed in Australia was a Chinese man in his 50s.
The man is currently being quarantined at Monash Hospital in Clayton, a Chinese district in Melbourne.
The patient is believed to have arrived in Melbourne from Guangzhou on Flight CZ321 of China Southern Airlines at around 9:00am on January 19. Mikacos said it would inform all passengers on the affected flight.
The man was travelling alone at that time, and the previous flight was from Wuhan to Guangzhou`s China Southern Airlines Flight CZ3706. According to the Herald Sun, the man was visiting relatives in Australia.
Dr Angie Bone, chief health officer for Victoria, said the man had not been to any public place since arriving in Australia and had only been in contact with his family. But Bourne didn`t say which city he lived in.
Authorities is also closely monitoring the patient`s family for signs of any symptoms.
The man was taken to see a general practitioner (GP) on Thursday, but doctors did not associate the case with a new type of coronavirus at the time.
When the patient`s condition worsened, the family contacted the hospital and sent it to hospital yesterday. He has pneumonia symptoms and is currently in isolation.
At 2:25 a.m. today, men were confirmed to be positive for a new type of coronavirus.
Ms Byrne said she was concerned the general practitioner had not linked the patient`s condition to his condition from Wuhan at all. The Department of Health has now issued warnings to hospitals and general practitioners about the new type of coronavirus and has provided recommendations on symptoms. "We ask GPs to inquire about the travel history of patients with respiratory diseases. "
Byrne also revealed the man didn`t know how he contracted the respiratory disease but didn`t show symptoms on board the plane. He has never been to a market supposed to be the source of a new type of coronavirus, or a medical worker in china to treat suspected patients. "He could be a`secondhand case`."
She said there was so little knowledge of the virus`s incubation period that it wasn`t clear when he was infected.
However, michael mccakos urged melbourne people to avoid panic, calling the public`s risk "low" and "we are doing everything we can to keep the community safe ".

As of 10:30 beijing time on january 25th, china had diagnosed 1326 cases of pneumonia with a new type of coronavirus and 41 cases of death. Among them,572 were diagnosed in Wuhan,39 in death,5 in Hong Kong,21 in suspected,3 in TW,54 in suspected and 2 in Macau.
In addition to Australia, Thailand, France, Singapore, Vietnam, Japan, the United States and Nepal have also been confirmed.
