Federal immigration minister Gao Min (David Coleman) confirmed that new remote area visas will be one of the ways for immigrants to live forever, but need to prove that they did live in designated areas.

Two new technology visas for remote areas, to be introduced in November, require skilled immigrants to live and work in remote areas of Australia, where they can apply for permanent residence after three years of living there.

Although the specific visa requirements have not yet been fully announced, Gao Min revealed that government will closely audit the personal information of visa holders when evaluating the relevant permanent residence applications, the SBS reported.

"when they apply three years later [in remote areas], they need to use account information, salary status, home address, etc., to prove that they are really full for three years," Gao said in an interview with 2GB Radio.

"one of the big reasons immigrants are willing to come to Australia is to have the right of permanent residence, but they can`t live forever unless they can prove they do stay in the Australian countryside," he said.

In addition to skilled immigrants, authorities also hopes to push international students outside the big cities.

Gao Min said the new policy of directing new immigrants to remote areas is a driving force for economic development in rural areas where more people are urgently needed to fill skills gaps.

He also highlighted government`s desire to send immigrants to remote areas, including foreign students to Australia. He said government "encourages foreign students to settle in remote areas of Australia. If they go to rural universities, they will receive visas for graduates to stay in Australia for an additional year, so they can stay for three years instead of two."
